New from Classic Drummer Magazine:

Doane Perry, whose playing personifies stylistic evolution, weaves intricate rhythms into his signature performances and incorporates a masterful understanding of musicality as the industry changes from generation to generation. As a forerunner in adapting to musical transitions, his versatility has earned him the coveted drumming chair not only with the legendary Jethro Tull for the past 28 years (as well as a Grammy award for the group’s win in the “Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Album” category for 1988’s Crest of a Knave) but also with such stellar artists as Bette Midler, Lou Reed, Todd Rundgren, Phyllis Hyman, Dweezil Zappa, The Chieftains, Stan Getz, Teo Macero, Pat Benatar, Michael Brecker, Kitaro, and Anoushka Shankar, among many others. Beyond Tull’s drum throne, Perry has lent his percussive talents to over 100 records by other artists, many of which have reached gold to multi-platinum status. Witnessing this rhythmist’s performances, one is reminded of a Renaissance alchemist who converts elements into precious metals—Perry’s playing is similar, as he converts complex polyrhythms into pure music, establishing mood and atmosphere.

One will soon realize when conversing with Perry that he has mastered all of these styles simply because he is intrigued by and passionate about all music. His business and drumming knowledge, accentuated and accompanied by an articulate, congenial personality and positive attitude, enables him to honor musical challenges with conviction and confidence. Having played professionally since his late teens, Perry’s versatile drumming is evident, as his discography and history include recordings and performances in rock, pop, jazz, fusion, R&B, Celtic, world music, classical, folk, and blues, as well as a few uncategorized hybrid genres, which he seamlessly assimilates into his stylistic approach.

Perry, during this conversation with Classic Drummer, discussed his extensive career with, outside of, and beyond Jethro Tull, offering a myriad of tips on staying on top of one’s game, working in a competitive market, and adapting to changes in the music business, and reflecting on his personal remembrances and anecdotes during his colorful and accomplished career as a performer, composer, and writer.
